The Scholarship project: The “KRABEY” Fund
What is it?
The “Krabey fund” is a revolving fund that was created to provide university scholarships to selected and promising students.“Krabey” is the Khmer word for the Water Buffalo. The name was chosen since the water buffalo is known to be a very hardworking and resilient animal, symbolically important in the Khmer culture.
Through the Krabey Fund, the KF extends its support to well performing children after their secondary education to advance their studies in higher education. As of 2013, there are 14 students that are being supported in universities in Cambodia and one student in a University in Thailand. Up until 2012, the KF provided full financial grants to support the scholarship costs of successful students. However, due to the KF’s low annual budget, this activity was very financially challenging to sustain.
Upon graduation and as soon as they are employed, and can generate a decent income, the students will be asked to pay back little by little the cost of their education. The reimbursement rate is very low, since on average income per month they can generate is 180-200 usd, and they should pay back 5 % of their monthly income (this is not yet fully enforced) back to the fund. This money goes back to the Krabey fund/scholarship fund in order to enable the fund to be self-sustaining. It will enable the fund to keep supporting new students.
We received seed funding for the “Krabey fund” from a Senior Alumni Club from a University in Netherland in 2012.
As of 2013 all graduates had a 100% success rate in finding a job.
Why do we need your help/how you can help?
The KF aims at establishing the much needed continuity for the children after the primary school to pursue their study and to have access when they have the capacity to graduate with a bachelor or a master degree. The higher education program must be a priority as all successful graduated students had their lives radically changed after the graduation:
The Krabey fund aims to enable two students from the Homes to enroll into university curriculum every year. You can help by directly contributing to the Krabey funds. You can help by identifying organizations with a social mission that would be interested to support such funds. You can also help with identifying/connecting KF with international universities that would have the capacity to offer scholarships to under-privileged students. At all time you can monitor the scholarship grants, track progress and performance of the successful students, and even provide if you wish to mentoring support to the students on key studies topic ranging from economics, mathematics, foreign language, management, etc.
You can help by directly contributing to the Krabey fund. To do so, you can sponsor a student ($1,160 per year). You can help by donating what you are willing to; you can help us to connect to organizations /individuals that would be willing to contribute.
What are the goals for the Krabey Fund?
The goals are to allow two new students per year to access to university, while continuing to ensure that the students that are already enrolled are supported during the five years of their university. We aim to have at least 75% of the children graduating with a baccalaureate and to graduate with a university
